Abstract
The study sought to assess the need for a code of ethics for librarians in Zambia. The specific objectives of the study were:To establish whether there were any proffessional values that librarians follow in the absence of a code of ethics, establish whether there was a need for a code of ethics for librarians in Zambia and to find out if in the absence of a code of ethics, the performance of librarians on duty was affected. The study used a sample research design where 120 librarians from Colleges, Universities, Special and Public libraries were purposively sampled for the survey. Two research instruments were used to gather data for the study, questionnaires and interview schedules. The study established that there were professional values that librarians adhered to in the absence of the code of ethics such patron service, preservation of records, and equal access to information among others. The study also established that there was a need for a code of ethics fo librarians in Zambia and that the absence of a code of ethics, affected the performance of librarians in the course of duty.Further more the study has established that Zambia Library Association has the capacity to develope a code of ethics, but has no ability to enforce it due to the absence of library legislation in Zambia. In conclusion, the study comfirmed that librarianship in Zambia is a profession with shared professional values worldwide and in need of a code of ethics. The study therefore recommends that The Zambia Library Association develops a code of ethics for its professionals first and then lobby for library legislation.
