An investigation into the relationship between home background and indiscipline among secondary school pupils in selected Zambian schools

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not there was a relationship between home-background of pupils and indiscipline in selected Zambian secondary schools, The sample consisted of 102: grade Eleven pupils aged from 17 to 18,it was subdivided into two groups of 51 each, group 1 comprised the problem pupils and group Two the non-problem pupils. Participants were drawn from five day secondary schools in Lusaka for this study were collected through a questionnaire administered to pupils to provide information on the following aspects of the home-background: parental occupation, housing conditions, overcrowding, family size, family disruption, family tension and frequency of physical punishment,data were analysed by the use of the mean, standard deviation and percentages, statistical significance was tested of the use of the chi-square and the 2. test. The study found that there was a significant relationship between indiscipline among secondary pupils and all, except one home-background variable, namely: frequency of physical punishment.
