An analysis of competitive handball development in Zambia from 1980 to 2019: a historical perspective.

Abstract
This study aimed at invesigating the development of Competitive Handball in Zambia from 1980 to 2019. The study was grounded on the theory of the evolution of modern sport by Stefan Szymanski (2008). Semi-structured interviews with key informants and document review of relevant literature were used in this qualitative study during data collection. The sampling procedure used was Maximum variation sampling, also known as heterogeneous sampling. A sample of twenty respondents were purposively sampled from various sports organisations, former and current Handball players were interviewed. Thematic data was analysised using the Nvivo v10 to come up with emerging themes. Some of the themes that imerged were: Handball intorduced by ZCCM and Sports for All programme, the challenge trophy tournament, adquate sports fascilities and factors of performance. This study is expected to contribute to the existing body of knowledge and also provide reference material for academics and other researchers. The work will be of use to the ministry responsible for education, MYSCD, NOCZ, NSCZ and HAZ as it amalgamates and consolidates information on the trajectory and evolvement of Handball in Zambia from 1980 to 2019. The findings reveal that Handball in Zambia, was introduced in the early 1980s by ZCCM on the Copperbelt and in 1992 under the sports for All programme. The study recommends that HAZ should intensify awareness campaigns and programmes of Handball at community and national level, targeting schools, colleges, and universities. This will in turn lead to a wider selection of players and the sport being played extensively.
