Abstract
The purpose of the study was to determine effects of work life balance on employee performance in the banking sector. The unit of study was AB Bank which is a private commercial bank in Zambia. The main objective of the study was to determine the effects of work-life balance on employee performance at AB Bank Zambia Limited. The specific objectives were to examine the nature of work-life balance at AB Bank Zambia Limited, identify the policies and practices for ensuring work-life balance at AB Bank and its effects on employees and finding out how work life balance affects employee performance at AB Bank Zambia Limited. The research used a descriptive technique. The method used to collect data was primary method. Primary data was gathered through questionnaires that had both open and closed ended questions. The target population of the study was 500 from which a sample size of 222 was determine using a Taro Yamani’s method. Qualitative data was analyzed using a content and thematic analysis while statistical package for social science (SPSS) was used for closed ended questions. The data was mainly presented in table format where percentages were presented. Using the Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation with one - tailed test of significance, the correlation analysis was made to investigate any relationship between work life balance practices and employee performance. The study revealed that work life priorities conflict affected the performance of employees. The study, therefore, concluded that work life balance is an important aspect of work and family which should be embraced to improve employee’s performance. The study therefore recommended that AB Bank human resource should come up with new policies and initiatives as well as review the old ones in order to balance what employees do in their jobs and how they cater for their family needs to reduce the imbalance and thus improve their performance. It is expected that the study will be utilized by the Human Resource Department of AB Bank Zambia Limited to understand the effects of work life balance on the performance of employees.
