This research focused on solving the problems of application access from multiple file servers in a Novell network that caters for a large user community. The application access technique discussed in this dissertation is a step towards creating a computer network system, called a Virtual Machine (VM), with the following characteristics: it is simple to implement, scalable, easy to manage, transparent to the user and suitable for the conditions prevailing in a university-type environment. The VM has some of the features of a distributed system, but is not as complex and is built around a very popular commercial network operating system called NetWare. This dissertation presents the motivation, requirements, design considerations and performance of the developed VM.en_US
