The Challenges of constitutional democracy in Zambia

Abstract

Zambia as a country with a written constitution which itself declares that the country shall be a democratic state manifests the people's quest to establish a constitutional democracy. Constitutional democracy as a concept that presupposes the existence of a system of separate powers, checked and balanced, poses many challenges to a country like Zambia. While it is the /wish of the people of Zambia to establish a constitutional democracy, this essay demonstrates that a lot more needs to be done if the country is to attain lat status.

The essay highlights the generally accepted principles of constitutional democracy and then examines the extent to which Zambia has managed to achieve them.

The essay appraises the constitution and other laws as well as the governance system of Zambia against the widely accepted principles of Constitutional democracy.
