    Abstract
The main aim of this chapter is to bring out the basic principles y of library legislation and to highlight some of the outstanding statements on public library legislation. It will further examine ' the strong and weak points of these statements in the light of the latest trends in the field. To this end, not only genesis and working of these statements have been critically discussed, but also where necessary extracts of texts from working library acts from some countries have been provided.
