Abstract
The study is an interpretative analysis of the French to English translation of selected stories from “Les Contes d’Amadou Koumba” to “Tales of Amadou Koumba”. It seeks to analyse the translation in the light of the steps outlined by the interpretative theory of translation and also aims at observing how the linguistic aspects (semantics, syntax and stylistics) of the text are presented in its translation. Different contemporary theories of translation are outlined but the focus is on one; The Interpretative Theory of Translation, which is later applied in the analyses of the selected stories in French and their English translations. The interpretative theory is an extension of the linguistic theory of translation, though it differs from it in the sense that it is not entirely based on the comparison of languages (language systems) and it does not take sentences as translation units (as comparative linguistics did); the interpretative theory of translation emphasises contextual translation, highlighting the analysis of meaning as it appears in the text or speech. Using close textual analysis, the two versions of the texts were analysed based on the selected theory. The findings of this analysis were that two of the selected texts “Les Mammelles” and “Maman Caiman” were translated in the manner outlined by the interpretative theory (Comprehension-Deverbalisation-Reformulation) with a variation of translation techniques having been used, whereas the other two “Petit-Mari” and “La Biche et Les Deux Chasseurs” were for the most part translated literally and did not follow the interpretative way of translating. We also found that of the linguistic aspects analysed, the semantic aspect was generally well transferred from the source language to the target language whereas the syntactic and stylistic aspects did not maintain their form from the source language as they conformed to the language system of the target text.
