This paper takes a critical look at the Zambian Education system by focusing on the teaching of English in the
country. This is achieved through discussing the structure and organisation of the education system, teacher training
and the standard of English to be taught in schools relative to other varieties. By reviewing studies which have been
conducted on the teaching of English in Zambia, the paper observes that while remarkable strides have been made in
improving the teaching of English, there are a number of issues which need attention. For instance, the recognition
of translanguaging and its pedagogic value forms a big part of the argument in this paper
