Abstract
This dissertation evaluates the performance of routing protocols such as OSPF, EIGRP and IS-IS in an enterprise network. Routing protocols are rules that govern the best route to transfer data between various nodes in an internetwork. These networks are then used in the transmission of information from the transmitting end to the receiving end. Routing protocol's responsibility lies in determining the best way routers communicate with each other in order to forward any kind of data packets using the optimal path. Routing protocols govern the best route to transfer data between various nodes in networks. They are used so that communication between the routers can take place. Routing plays a very significant role in advertising the route of one network to another network as well to find the best path between the source to the destination. The efficiency of the routing can be determined on the basis of routing metrics for each routing protocol. In a network topology, different kinds of routing protocols are used for forwarding data packets. Routing protocols are in two different categories and these are static routing which is done manually by the administrator and dynamic routing which is done automatically by using some routing protocols. A routing table is employed within the memory of a router that keeps track of all the routes to a particular network’s destination and the most popular routing algorithms used to forward network traffic are Intermediate System-Intermediate system (IS-IS), Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP), Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) and Routing Information Protocol (RIP). The evaluation of this dissertation was achieved by measuring packet delay variation, Jitter, Ethernet delay, traffic sent and received parameters by employing Riverbed Modeler Academic edition 17.5 using Http, Video conferencing and Voice data types. The first protocol evaluation was achieved using OSPF alone and the second evaluation was achieved using the combined OSPF and IS-IS (OSPF_IS-IS) while the third evaluation was also a combination of OSPF and EIGRP (OSPF_EIGRP). Simulation work was done on these routing protocols using OPNET Simulation software. The results shows that the combined OSPF_IS-IS protocols outperforms the of OSPF- EIGRP and OSPF protocols by 60%.
