The problem of minimizing the total costs on transmission lines wayleave maintenance or bush clearing is one of minimizing the costs on labour, materials, transport and overheads (logistics). Fires in the vicinity of power lines cause faults. When enough carbon and moisture emanates from a fire, phase to ground (flashover or discharge) and phase to phase faults occur on power transmission lines .The trade offs between maintenance costs and risks of power line faults should ultimately result in the reduction of maintenance costs as well as reduce the risk of fires that are able to cause line faults. Mathematical programming methods such as linear programming, network flow and critical path scheduling are suited particularly well for supporting management decision-making processes. Linear programming is one of the most employed management science tools used in solving optimisation problems, such as minimising costs and resource usage. This ensures that the objective, in relation to other imposed limitations, is satisfied. Critical path analysis method could be used to reduce the bush clearing costs through optimal allocation of resources: time, money, materials, human and other resources. In essence a systematic and well-organised bush clearing maintenance should therefore be attained at the lowest possible cost. A power transmission system is judged by its economic success that is by its ability to furnish a reliable supply to consumers at a price lower than that of any alternative scheme.
