dc.description.abstract | The main objective of this research was to assess factors affecting saving culture among civil servants in Zambia. The specific objectives were based on investigating the link between real income of civil servants and their level of savings in Lusaka, to study the relationship between the rate of return on savings and saving practices among civil servants, and to study the relationship between consumption and savings among civil servants. Additionally, the study utilised a mix method approach and total 60 respondents were sampled using Slovin’s formula. Furthermore, data that was collected qualitatively was analyzed using thematic content analysis while data which was collected quantitatively was analysed using bivariate analysis Pearson’s correlation. In view of the aforementioned, findings revealed that there was poor saving culture among civil servants with 45% of them unable to save, while the majority cited low income, high number of dependents, lower returns, and other constraints such as the high cost of living in Lusaka as factors inhibiting saving. Among other things, the study recommends that government increases salaries for civil servants, and also partners with relevant stakeholders to design programs aimed at enhancing knowledge and capacity relating to the saving culture among civil servants. This is necessary for the purpose of improving welfare among civil servants in Zambia. | |
