dc.description.abstractLearner and teacher discipline is one of the pillars of the education system of any country. However, research studies have found that cases of learners’ and teachers’ indiscipline are growing at a very alarming rate. Without the discipline of both learners and teachers, the learner’s academic performance has been known to be poor. The general objective of the study was to assess the effect of the learners’ and teachers’ indiscipline on the learner’s academic performance in selected secondary schools of Lusaka district. The specific objectives of the study were to; identify the forms and causes of learners’ and teachers’ indiscipline in selected secondary schools of Lusaka district, assess the effects of the learners’ and teachers’ indiscipline on the learners’ academic performance and recommend ways of how to rectify the problem of the learners’ and teachers’ indiscipline in selected secondary schools of Lusaka district. The research method which was used for the purpose of this study was qualitative, specifically the case study designe. The study involved a total number of four (4) schools from which 133 participants were selected of which 100 were learners, 30 teachers and 3 head teachers. The data for the study was collected using questionnaires, interview guides and focus group discussion. The study, revealed that indeed the cases of learners’ and teachers’ indiscipline in secondary school is alarming and that learner indiscipline is more common as compared to teacher indiscipline. The findings also revealed that the learners’ and teachers’ indiscipline has a negative effect on the learners’ academic performance. In addition, the findings highlighted the need for teachers to be role models of discipline and the cooperation of all stakeholders as one of the main strategies that need to be put in place if the issue of the learners’ and teachers’ indiscipline is to be rectified in selected secondary schools of Lusaka district.
