A series of laboratory test work were carried out to optimize solvent extraction at Kansanshi mine. Results from the laboratory were transferred to the Cytec pilot plant which simulated the Kansanshi High Grade II solvent extraction plant. The organic and aqueous contact time was determined using a pregnant solution containing 5g/l Cu and this grade were maintained throughout the laboratory test work. pH isotherms for Cu and Fe were generated. Two extraction stages were established from the McCabe Thiele diagram generated. Also established were the temperature and reagent (LIX 984N) concentration in the organic phase constituting Shellsol as a diluent. A good result was obtained on the Cytec pilot plant with Cu recovery in the extraction stage ranging between 95 and 98%. Other parameters affecting solvent extraction were also observed. These included: crud at weir; organic and aqueous interface heights. The crud was seen to be rising in the stripping stages while decreasing in the extraction stages. To minimize aqueous entrainment, the organic and aqueous heights used were 13 and 14 cm respectively.en_US
