Abstract
Enormous progress has been made in tackling the
HIV epidemic. Many people with HIV are leading
healthy and happy lives, with fulfilling relationships
and work. Yet problems remain. Significant numbers
of people with HIV have health difficulties, those from
less powerful communities may be ‘left behind’, and
psychosocial issues related to HIV remain underaddressed.
In addition, since 2008, the financial crisis and accompanying UK ‘austerity’ policies have
generated cuts in health and especially social services
that have severely affected HIV services and the lives of
those living with the virus.
