Abstract
This study sought to examine relevance of counselling services for academic success of pupils in
five selected secondary schools in Luwingu District in Northern Province of Zambia.
Respondents were selected from the five schools in Luwingu District. Purposive sampling was
used to select the schools and the teachers found in guidance offices. The learners were randomly
selected as respondents apart from those found in the careers club who were purposely selected.
The total sample for study was 62 (respondents).
Data from teachers was collected through questionnaire and interview. Data from learners was
collected through interview and focus group discussion. Qualitative data was analysed
thematically. This involved coding and categorising of data to generate themes which were
presented descriptively. Quantitative data was presented in tables and figures to generate
frequencies and percentages.
The study findings revealed that counselling services play a very cardinal role in bringing out
academic excellence in schools in changing behaviour, participating actively in the school
activities and having a focus of one’s dream in life although these schools are still struggling to
arrive at this. These counselling services should be provided and accessed by learners to
enhance academic success. Guidance teachers should be qualified and little time should be
allocated to them for teaching but instead attend to learners.
